Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infects over 90% of the world’s adult population. EBV infection is associated with Burkitt’s lymphoma (LB), although it is not sufficient on its own to induce carcinogenesis, implying the involvement of cofactors. LB is endemic in African regions exposed to mycotoxins. Z. Herceg’s team has demonstrated that exposure to mycotoxins and oncogenic viruses increases the risk of cancer, in part through deregulation of the immune response.
